The British Virgin Islands boast one of the most favorable and extended sailing seasons in the world. The prime charter season runs from December through May. During this period, the weather is consistently dry, sunny, and less humid, with average air temperatures holding steady between 77°F and 85°F (25°C - 29°C). Water temperatures are equally inviting, typically ranging from 78°F to 82°F (26°C - 28°C), perfect for swimming and watersports. The defining characteristic of this season is the reliable easterly trade winds, locally known as the "Christmas Winds" when they are at their strongest in December and January. These winds typically blow at a consistent 15 to 25 knots, creating exhilarating but stable sailing conditions within the protected Sir Francis Drake Channel. The sea state is generally calm inside the channel, with swells rarely exceeding 3-5 feet. The shoulder months of June and November can also offer fantastic sailing with fewer crowds, though with a slightly higher chance of precipitation. The official hurricane season runs from late June to November, with the highest risk in August and September, a period when many charter companies suspend operations for maintenance.
While the BVI is a compact cruising ground, it offers distinct experiences based on your itinerary's focus. We design routes based on your preferences for seclusion, social activity, or sailing challenges.
Cluster 1: The Southern Cays (Norman Island, Peter Island, Cooper Island)
This is the quintessential BVI experience, often forming the core of a one-week charter. The vibe is social, centered around iconic beach bars, legendary snorkeling spots like "The Indians" and "The Caves," and accessible, well-maintained mooring fields. The sailing is straightforward and protected, making it ideal for first-time charterers and families. The proximity of the islands means short, enjoyable sails of just an hour or two, maximizing time spent at anchor. The difficulty is low, with navigation primarily line-of-sight.
Cluster 2: The Virgin Gorda Sound (Virgin Gorda, The Dogs, Scrub Island)
This cluster offers a more refined and visually dramatic experience. The main draw is The Baths on Virgin Gorda, a geological marvel of giant granite boulders. The North Sound of Virgin Gorda is a hub of luxury, with high-end resorts, fine dining, and premier marinas like the Bitter End Yacht Club and Saba Rock. The sailing here is also well-protected, but navigating the entry to The Baths and understanding the swell conditions requires more attention. This area offers a blend of natural wonder and upscale amenities. The difficulty is low to moderate, demanding situational awareness around key attractions.
Cluster 3: The Outer Reaches (Jost Van Dyke & Anegada)
This itinerary route is for those seeking a blend of laid-back fun and true blue-water sailing. Jost Van Dyke is the BVI’s social epicenter, home to the world-famous Foxy’s and the Soggy Dollar Bar. It’s an easy sail from Tortola. In contrast, Anegada is a different world. It is a flat coral atoll lying 15 nautical miles north of Virgin Gorda, requiring a more challenging open-ocean passage. Navigating the channel through the surrounding Horseshoe Reef demands skill and careful planning. The reward is unparalleled seclusion, vast, empty beaches, and a legendary lobster dinner on the sand. A trip to Anegada is a badge of honor for BVI sailors. The difficulty is moderate to advanced, specifically for the Anegada passage.
